DESCRIPTION:This session with be led by Stella Halkyard (Visual Collectio
ns & Academic Engagement Manager\, Special Collections\, University of M
anchester Library) and Dr Elizabeth Upper (Research Associate\, John Ryl
ands Research Institute). \nStella will give an overview of the kinds of
material culture held within the University of Manchester Library’s Vis
ual Collections and outline some of ways in which these materials can be
used in research. In particular\, she will demonstrate how curators em
ploy various empirical and hermeneutic methodologies to identify\, descr
ibe and present different types of visual materials and examine how thes
e permit ‘unmediated’ forms of access to the various audiences that wish
to use them. Students will be given the opportunity experience some of
these practices directly through small group exercises.\nIn contrast El
izabeth will provide an overview of her project as a Research Associate
of the John Ryland Research Institute working on the one of the Library’
s Visual Collections – the Holtorp Collection. Using her project as a ca

e employs in her interrogation of this example of a Visual Collection. \
