 nvites you \nto attend a panel discussion on Thursday 9th May\, which wi
 ll be \ndiscussing the opportunities and challenges of addressing ‘honou
 r’-based \nabuse. Hear from a range of representatives working in the po
 licing\, \neducation\, research and community sectors\, including leadin
 g national \nexperts\, Karma Nirvana. The panel will also be responding 
 to questions \nposed by the audience. Information about the development 
 of our new \nHBA Collection\, and other HBA projects will be available.

 ’-based abuse (HBA) has now been recognised as a significant \nsocial pr
 oblem in the United Kingdom. Once absent from national-level \ndiscussio
 n\, the last two decades have seen several developments aimed at \nincre
 asing awareness\, protecting and supporting victims\, and bringing \nper
 petrators to justice. These developments have included the introduction 
 \nof a national policing strategy for HBA (2008)\, the criminalisation o
 f forced \nmarriage (2014) and the creation of a national Day of Memory 
 for victims \n(2015). \n\nExisting research indicates that HBA is both u
 nder-reported and under-\nrecorded. Victims face significant barriers to
  disclosing and reporting \noffences. Research conducted by the Universi
 ty of Manchester indicates \nthat there are also many barriers in aiding
  professionals in identifying and \naddressing HBA. When HBA is identifi
 ed\, victims may not receive the \nappropriate response from professiona
 ls or in the cases of reports made to \nthe police\, there may not be en
 ough evidence to charge perpetrators. All \nthis creates a very challeng
 ing environment in which to address HBA\n\nJoin us from 5pm on Thursday 
 9th May where our panel of experts will be \ndiscussing these issues and
  more. You’ll have the opportunity to put your \nquestions to a range of
  professionals\, including representatives from Karma \nNirvana\, The Un
 iversity of Manchester\, West Yorkshire Police\, education \nand a local
  community organisation.\n\n\n\n\n\n
