SUMMARY: Picturing Music in Sixteenth-Century Antwerp: Marten de Vos’s Mo
 tet Prints

DESCRIPTION:In 1584 the painter Marten de Vos\, the engraver Johan Sadele
r and the composer Cornelis Verdonck worked together to produce a motet
print. This was the first ever engraved representation of mensural musi
cal notation\, set within a beautifully designed image of the Virgin and
Child enthroned. This talk explores the motivations behind this collabo
ration\, the practicalities that it involved and\, crucially\, how this
type of print might help us to understand the relationship between music
and art in early modern Antwerp.
