DESCRIPTION:Launch of the People\, Place and Energy Research Centre with 
 a guest lecture by Professor Peter Newell\n\nLaunch of PPERC position pa
 per on place-based energy transformations with Nannette Youssef\, Policy
  Manager at the Runnymede Trust\n\nHow can the world wean itself off cli
 mate changing fossil fuels? This is among the greatest and most difficul
 t challenges the world currently faces. In this talk\, Professor Newell 
 shares some emerging findings from a research project exploring the poli
 tical economy of supply-side policies which seek to leave fossil fuels i
 n the ground through bans\, moratoria\, restrictions on finance and the 
 like. He will discuss national and global attempts to advance these poli
 cies and where we might go next in advancing this critical agenda.\n\nNa
 nnette Youssef is Policy Manager at the Runnymede Trust - Britain’s lead
 ing race equality think tank - developing their climate work. Nannette r
 ecently designed and wrote a major report titled A vision for climate ju
 stice: Tackling the climate and nature emergency and global systemic rac
 ism.\n\nPeter Newell is Professor of International Relations at the Univ
 ersity of Sussex\, sustainability theme lead at the Sussex School for Pr
 ogressive Futures and co-founder of the Rapid Transition Alliance. He ha
 s previously worked at the universities of Oxford\, Warwick\, East Angli
 a in the UK and FLACSO Argentina. His research focuses on the global pol
 itical economy of energy transitions\, especially with regard to the pha
 se out of fossil fuels which is the focus on an ERC/UKRI grant. His most
  recent books include Power Shift: The Global Political Economy of the E
 nergy Transition\, Changing Our Ways: Behaviour Change and the Climate C
 risis\, Global Green Politics and States of Transition: From Governing t
 he Environment to Transforming Society. In 2025 he was awarded the BISA 
 prize for his distinguished contribution to the discipline of Internatio
 nal Relations.
