SUMMARY:Intimate Geopolitics Workshop
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}rfe-iuqssl6
 5-lstr0p
DESCRIPTION:This one and a half day workshop seeks to explore the potenti
als and possibilities opened up by the turn towards thinking about geopo
litics as part of the intimate everyday lives of people (as well as vice
versa) and to bring existing work in this area into conversation. It wi
ll explore how new bordering processes are internalised\, negotiated\, a
nd resisted in intimate relations and practices. This workshop brings to
gether contributions from across the social sciences that attend to the
interweaving of ‘bordering’ and ‘the intimate’ in ways that force us to
think about the intertwining of intimacy and geopolitics.\n\nPanellists:

n on Thursday 3rd of November by Leverhulme Visiting Professor V. Spike
Peterson entitled 'Intimacy\, Geopolitics and the State 1.15-2.15pm in T
he Coal Room\n\nKeynote Abstract: How can loving emotions and intimate r
elations produce exclusions and social violence that trouble global rela
tions? In this talk I first explore how variations of ‘the intimate’ sha
pe geopolitical practices\, often in unexpected ways. I then focus on th
e ‘love of marriage’ and consider how this produces not only inequalitie
s of gender and sexuality but also of ethnicity/race\, class and nationa
l prosperity. The latter inequalities are less often or less visibly ide
ntified with marriage\, yet are key to urgent global issues\, including
today’s political polarizations and ‘migration crises.’\n\nBooking enqui
