 nWhy is Europe’s great monetary endeavour\, the Euro\, in trouble? A str
 ing of economic difficulties in Greece\, Ireland\, Spain\, Italy\, and o
 ther Eurozone nations—including the landmark vote by the United Kingdom 
 to leave the EU—has left observers wondering whether the currency union 
 can survive. Does the core problem with the Euro lies in the philosophic
 al differences between the founding countries of the Eurozone\, particul
 arly Germany and France? Have the troubles faced by the Euro led its mem
 ber states to focus on national\, as opposed to collective\, responses? 
 Is this response explained by the resurgence of the battle of economic i
 deas?\n\nHarold James is Professor of History and International Affairs 
 and the Claude and Lore Kelly Professor of European Studies at Princeton
  University\, and Historian at the International Monetary Fund. His book
 s include The German Slump (1986)\, The End of Globalization: Lessons fr
 om the Great Depression (2001)\, Europe Reborn: A History 1914-2000 (200
