DESCRIPTION:For large datasets\, e.g. millions of records\, a dedicated d
atabase environment would be the storage medium of choice. A database en
vironment is designed to store data efficiently while at the same time m
aking the retrieval of the data you want very straight forward using sim
ple to learn SQL queries. The often hidden advantage of a database syste
m is that the actual database storage can be on a remote server whilst t
he query environment is on your desktop. The only data that takes up mem
ory on your machine are the records returned by your queries.\n\nThis fr
ee webinar\, organised by the UK Data Service\, will explain various dif
ferent database environments and storage regimes and show you how easy i
t can be to start retrieving data using standard SQL queries.\n\nBook a
 place at https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/news-and-events/eventsitem/?id=
5591\n\nAbout the webinar series: getting data\, storing data\, manipula
ting data\n\nAll projects need data. You either generate it yourself via
surveys or the like\, you get some from the UK Data Service\, or you fi
nd some means to beg\, borrow or steal it. If you didn’t generate it you
rself\, the chances are it is not quite what you wanted but you can adap
t it to your needs. You adapt the data by a variety of means\; cleaning
the data\, extracting parts of the data (and ignoring the rest) and tric
kiest of all joining data from different sources.\n\nThis series of thre
e webinars will cover some ways of dealing with these data issues using
both familiar software tools such as Excel and others that you be aware
of but haven’t had any direct experience of.\n
