DESCRIPTION:Alliance Manchester Business School's Health Services Researc
h Centre present a research seminar:\n\nDr Lorelei Jones: "Health system
s world-wide are increasingly holding boards of health care organisation
s accountable for the quality of care that they provide. Previous empiri
cal research has found associations between certain board practices and
higher quality patient care\; however little is known about how boards g
overn for quality improvement (QI).\n\nIn this seminar I will be discuss
ing findings from fieldwork conducted over 30 months in 15 healthcare pr
ovider organisations in England. Our analysis explored variation in how
boards enacted governance of quality improvement. From our analysis\, an
d using existing evidence of the links between board practices and quali
ty of care\, we constructed a measure of QI governance maturity. We then
compared organisations to identify the characteristics of those with ma
ture QI governance.\n\nWe found that boards with higher levels of maturi
ty in relation to governing for QI had the following characteristics: ex
plicitly prioritizing QI\; balancing short term (external) priorities wi
th long term (internal) investment in QI\; using data for QI\, not just
quality assurance\; engaging staff and patients in QI\; and encouraging
a culture of continuous improvement. These characteristics appeared to b
e particularly enabled and facilitated by board-level clinical leaders."
\n\nLight luncheon refreshment will be provided at the beginning of this
  seminar.
