When we get a nasty infection, we want our immune system to respond quickly and effectively to keep us healthy. But what happens when the immune system doesn't function properly?
From fighting the common cold to suffering a severe allergic reaction, the immune system plays a major role in controlling our everyday health. As we live in an environment surrounded by millions of potentially harmful microorganisms and substances, it is vital that our immune system reacts to protect us from the daily challenges we face. Immunology examines how the immune system fights harmful pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, and how misfiring of the immune system can lead to devastating disease.
During the Discover Immunology Day you will find out more about the study of Immunology at Manchester, the types of Immunology-based careers available to you and the cutting-edge research going on right now in our labs.
You will get the chance to see how immunology is studied in the lab, including gaining hands-on experience in a variety of techniques used to observe and detect infectious agents that enter the body.
