Abstract: A primary challenge encountered by sexually reproducing organisms is that of locating a suitable mate. Framed in this way, it is perhaps surprising that the vast majority of sexual organisms are not free to mate indiscriminately, but rather must find a complementary partner. Although this situation is well-appreciated in many familiar species (where self-incompatibility is synonymous with the sexes), a far more diverse range of behaviours can be observed in ciliates and fungi (where the number of “sexes” can reach tens of thousands).
In this talk I will describe some recent modelling work investigating the stochastic dynamics of these systems, that attempts to answer questions such as “what controls the number of sexes in these species?” and “why should self-incompatibility evolve at all?”. I will then conclude by discussing ongoing work that emphasises the importance of understanding these systems for real-world agricultural challenges.
