DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we argue that knowledge of linguistics can be 
 extremely useful\, particularly for language experts (teachers\, transla
 tors\, etc.). Far from the preconceived idea that a linguist is a scient
 ist locked in their ivory tower\, we show that linguistics has far-reach
 ing applications even within the realm of academia. The talk begins by p
 resenting some general aspects of the scientific study of language\, and
  then moves on to investigate some of the domains where knowledge of lin
 guistics can save the day. The data discussed show how linguistic scienc
 e possesses powerful conceptual tools capable of shedding light on langu
 age processes that speakers carry out automatically and unconsciously\, 
 phenomena that\, at first sight\, have no apparent explanation.\n\nThe t
