97\n\nClusters and Innovation in the Creative Industries: Insights from
the Creative Industries Radar Survey\n\nAbstract: The creative industrie
s play an increasingly important role in the UK economy\, but there are
numerous areas where there is little robust evidence about creative indu
stries businesses and the challenges they face. As a means of addressing
some of these gaps\, our team from the Creative Industries Policy and E
vidence Centre have launched the Creative Industries Radar programme\, i
nvolves the combination of scraped web data\, surveys and open data. In
this talk I will discuss some of our initial findings from the study\, w
ith particular reference to our forthcoming report on the role of microc
lusters in the creative industries. In the report we show that companies
in microclusters (that is\, smaller geographically concentrated groups
of creative industries businesses) have a number of different attributes
compared to businesses outside of microclusters. This difference is par
ticularly strong for those companies outside major creative clusters. In
addition to this\, I will also share some new findings from the study r
elating to innovation in the creative industries as it relates to these
microclusters.\n\nJosh Siepel is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) o
f Management at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Su
ssex. His research focuses on the intersection between entrepreneurship\
, skills and innovation\, with particular reference to the role of creat
ive industries and creative skills in the economy. He leads the Clusters
and Innovation workstrand of the Creative Industries Policy and Evidenc
e Centre. He is the PI at Sussex for the ERDF DRIVA (Digital Research in
Innovation Value Accelerator) project. He has been PI for research proj
ects valued at over £1.37 million. His research focuses on exploring pol
icy-relevant issues with academic rigour. For instance he was the lead a
uthor of the 2016 Fusion Effect report for Nesta\, which documented the
economic impact of the combination of arts and creative skills in the UK
. His research has been covered in publications including Forbes\, HR Ma
gazine and Arts Professional\, and has been cited in parliamentary evide
nce in the UK and Canada and by the World Economic Forum. He has carried
out commissioned research for the UK Department of Business Innovation
and Skills\, Nesta\, the National Physical Laboratory\, British Venture
Capital Association\, and European Commission. His research has been pub
lished in journals such as Small Business Economics\, Industrial and Cor
porate Change\, Technovation\, Technological Forecasting and Social Chan
ge\, R&D Management and Critical Perspectives on Accounting. He has succ
essfully supervised five PhD students\, who have gone on to work in acad
 emia and policy.\n\n
