DESCRIPTION:Dr. Augusto dos Santos Pereira is a Brazilian Geographer at t
 he Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (Brazilian census bur
 eau). He also works as a consultant in Urban Geography\, having particip
 ated in several projects of urban and regional planning. Among his lates
 t projects\, there can be found metropolitan integrated plans and studie
 s of urban networks funded by the United Nations and by the Inter-Americ
 an Development Bank. In opportunities like these he applies modern Data 
 Science tools throughout the entire analytical workflow.\n\nDr. Pereira 
 has recently completed an Urban Studies Foundation International Fellows
 hip at the London School of Economics\, working with Professor Michael S
 torper\, doing research on the conditions for the production of knowledg
 e and Innovation in Brazilian metropolitan areas under the current econo
 mic and technological paradigm.\n\nHis talk is titled 'Urban-Regional Pl
 anning and Data-intensive technologies: needs\, trends and challenges in
  a developing country'.\n\nGiven that the recent wave of data-intensive 
 technologies spawned new sets of techniques for problem-solving in many 
 fields\, the talk aims to present the current demands\, opportunities\, 
 and bottlenecks for the application of such data-centric tools to urban 
 and regional planning in developing countries. Thus\, attendants will be
  presented with contemporary conditions of territorial planning in Brazi
 l and the challenges for the application of Big Data and Data Science to
