Title: The impact of indoor solid fuel use on the stunting of Indian children
Abstract: About half of Indian children under the age of three years are stunted. We use data from the 2005-2006 National Family Health Survey in India and an instrumental variables approach to identify the causal impact of being exposed to indoor air pollution from burning solid fuels on child stunting. We find strong evidence that exposure to solid fuel smoke increases the probability of being stunted among Indian children as well as reducing the height-for-age measure for those children. Our results also indicate that childhood stunting prevails where poverty levels are higher, and where parents are less healthy and have lower education levels. We also find that ventilation practices can mitigate the adverse impacts of solid fuel use and reduce stunting.
