versity-based accelerator: drivers\, structure and ecosystem orchestrati
on dynamics\n\nAbstract:\n\nThis paper explores the creation and develop
ment process of an accelerator by a European business university\, inves
tigating the factors that led the university to found its own accelerato
r and that guided its set up process in terms of choice of focal activit
ies and governance structure\, as well as the mechanisms through which i
t creates value for its internal and external ecosystem. Relying on an i
n-depth case study approach\, we conducted several interviews with membe
rs of the accelerator\, key university stakeholders and external partner
 s. Our empirical evidence points to the existence of both internal and e
xternal drivers that led to the emergence of the university accelerator
and suggests that its operating and governance structures were strategic
ally designed to leverage the university’s internal strengths and resour
ces. It also underscores the key roles played by the top management of t
he university and by the internal champion in aligning views\, building
consensus\, and negotiating solutions in this process. Finally\, it reve
als how by strategically orchestrating the relationships with internal a
nd external stakeholders a university accelerator can successfully balan
ce the need of creating value for both the university and the broader ec
osystem in which it operates.\n\nMonica Masucci is a Senior Lecturer (A
ssociate Professor) in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Department o
f Strategy and Marketing at University of Sussex Business School\, UK. S
he holds a PhD in Business Administration and Management from Bocconi Un
iversity in Italy. She has been a Visiting Scholar at Copenhagen Busines
s School and Ivey Business School\, and is a Fellow of the Higher Educat
ion Academy. Before joining the University of Sussex in September 2011\,
she taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Bocconi Universit
y\, University of Castellanza and University of Milan in the areas of st
rategy\, entrepreneurship and cultural economics. She also worked on a n
umber of research and consulting projects dealing mostly with firms' int
ernationalization strategies\, new business development and innovation m
anagement in the consumer goods and energy industries. Monica is also an
