"In this chapter we speakers discuss possible research directions derived from the linguistic mismatch of university assessment expectations regarding standard English, and the lived reality of international students using one of many varieties of English. As such, we argue that decolonisation of the curriculum can be addressed by a basic linguistic awareness on the part of lecturers, to better understand how an international student body – here, with Chinese international students as the example – uses English in ways that are different but not deficient. Awareness of language can reflect awareness of culture, a key part of making campuses more ‘international’."
