DESCRIPTION:Part of the CTIS Research Seminar Series. All welcome\, no re
gistration necessary. Abstract: Among Translation Studies scholars\, the
situation during Japanese colonialism and post-colonialism is not well
known\; neither are translations by colonized indigenous people\, such a
 s the Ainu\, during that time.\nIn this presentation\, I will focus on t
wo Ainu who translated Ainu oral narratives into Japanese. They were sib
lings. \nKate Sturge (2007) pointed out that in cultural translation the
re is no real original. The question I ask here is what the originals we
re that these two translated and what their Japanese translations can te
ll us about the two translators and their agency.\n
