DESCRIPTION:The aim of this first Research Matters session of 2014 is to
consider the ways in which we can optimise the influence of MIE research
on society\, the economy\, culture\, public policy or services\, health
\, the environment and/or quality of life. Our starting point will be t
he four impact case studies produced for REF 2014: (i) The impact of res
earch on government policy regarding SEAL and AfA (NH)\; (ii) Assessment
tools and the impact on learners’ ‘understanding and use’ of mathematic
s in schools\, colleges and higher education (JW)\; (iii) Changing educa
tion policy and practice through challenging the link between social and
educational disadvantage (AD)\; and\, (iv) Changing public policy and p
rofessional practice through researching equity within schools and educa
tion systems (MA). Each case study author will talk briefly about the re
search itself\, the pathways to impact\, and the nature of the impact ac
hieved. This will be followed by an open discussion about how we can ma
ximize the impact of our research as we move forward.\n\n
