DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's Semester 2 programme for the 2
 015-16 academic year\, themed around Cultures and Temporalities. It is p
 resented in association with the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean
  Studies.\n\nWorkshop: 'American Landscapes: Art\, Nature\, Performance'
 \, 1pm-3pm (Roscoe Building 1.007)\n\nLed by Professor Jens Andermann (Z
 urich)\, this workshop will use a series of selected readings to compare
  several post-WWII engagements in U.S. and Latin American art with the m
 ateriality of land and the spatial dimension of sensory and kinetic expe
 rience\, focusing particularly on trans-American exchanges through exper
 iences of travel and exile. Readings will address Roberto Burle Marx’s g
 ardenesque ‘tropicalization’ of organic abstractionism\, the land art of
  Robert Smithson (including his 1969 journey to Mexico)\, Hélio Oiticica
 ’s New York restagings of his late 1960s ‘Tropicália’ environment\, and 
 the exilic land/body performances of Ana Mendieta and the Chilean C.A.D.
 A. artist/poet Raúl Zurita. The workshop will close with a reflection on
  landscape as a mnemonic device under conditions of postdictatorial upro
 otedness. \n\nThe workshop is open to all but numbers are limited and av
