Bernie Vining is a senior petroleum geoscientist with 40 years international experience in both executive and scientific roles in the petroleum industry with Exxon (latterly ExxonMobil) and Baker Hughes. On his retirement from Baker Hughes in March 2015, Bernie founded Vining Geoscience Ltd, located in London, to provide high quality, bespoke consultancy services to the petroleum sector. He is a Fellow and Visiting Professor in Petroleum Geoscience at Royal Holloway, University of London, his alma mater, and Chair of the Earth Sciences Advisory Board. In addition to his teaching and mentoring roles, he is active in geoscience research focussing on the quantitative assessment of petroleum resources and also into carbonate reservoir characterisation.

At Baker Hughes, Bernie was Vice President & Chief Geoscientist with responsibilities worldwide. This global advisory assignment included training, career development, special projects and research. Previously, he was a Principal & Regional Director for the consultancy Gaffney, Cline & Associates, now part of the Baker Hughes family.

Bernie spent 30 years of his career with Exxon in executive, technical and managerial assignments internationally. Particular highlights were as Manager of Exxon’s Geological Services worldwide and as Manager New Ventures for new business development opportunities in the Former Soviet Union. The former comprised leading a staff in excess of 100 specialists in a diverse range of disciplines in Houston e.g. well-site operations, petrophysics and global basin studies. In contrast, the latter involved leading integrated technical and commercial projects in collaboration with numerous national government entities in the Former Soviet Union.

Bernie is a well-recognised contributor to the global geoscience community, as convenor and presenter at international conferences, and also as an author and editor of scientific publications. For example, he is a former President of the Petroleum Group of The Geological Society and was convenor of the Sixth and Seventh Petroleum Geology Conferences in London and editor of their subsequent Proceedings volumes. He is a Fellow of The Geological Society and member of the AAPG. He is a Chartered Geologist and a European Geologist. As a member of SPEE, Bernie is a Certified Evaluator for the reporting of reserves and resources. He holds a doctorate in geology from King’s College, University of London.
