DESCRIPTION:Environmental NGOs contribute to the regulatory space in a va
riety of ways. They \ncan be involved in shaping the rules of regulation
by participating in both the \ndrafting of law and policy frameworks wi
thin which regulation is developed and\, \nmore directly\, in the settin
g of environmental standards\n\nEnvironmental NGOs have a clear role to
play in enforcing those rules both formally \n(by bringing private prose
cutions) and informally (through the use of ‘naming and \nshaming’ strat
egies) And\, perhaps most controversially\, NGOs can be formally co-opte
d \nby the state as regulatory surrogates \n\nTheir role in regulation i
s both important and valuable. In this lecture\, Professor Abbot will fo
 cus on\nlarger\, professional\, centralised and well-resourced environme
ntal NGOs and \nreflect upon the factors that constrain and enhance thei
r involvement in \nenvironmental regulation\n\nIn Person or Via Zoom: ht
 tps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82782816188?pwd=NHFOWDA5Y1ZyNmRNMFFSMnRYRnQwZz09
\n \nThe lecture will be followed by a drinks reception. \n\nWe will co
nfirm a new date for this event as soon as possible
