DESCRIPTION:Come and join us at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival in
Albert Square on Wednesday 4th October 3pm-5pm.\n\nThis interactive coo
king demonstration and taster session will bring together organisations
involved in tackling food poverty\, reducing food waste and older people
sharing their recipes\nand cooking skills. Research has highlighted how
some lower income older households are facing a ‘heating or eating’ dil
emma of having to choose between spending money on food or heating their
homes during the winter months. \nWhilst many older people (aged 50 yea
rs and older) in the UK have been less affected by the recent recession
than other age groups poverty can persist in old age. 1.6 million UK pen
sioners live below the poverty line. Older people often have\na reduced
appetite\, lower energy use\, lower biological and physiological functio
ns and can have reduced senses of smell and taste. Under-nutrition can l
ead to poorer health outcomes\,\nfalls and fractures\, delays in recover
y from illness as well as longer periods in hospital.\n\nFood is more th
an just nutrition\; it is an important part of people’s identities and f
amily life. But nearly 4 million older people live alone! You are invite
d to come along to try cooking some of the\nrecipes and taste the food c
ooked. The event will include older people demonstrating their favourite
recipes including those they remember from childhood\, which they still
cook now.\nThe project brings together researchers and dieticians from
the University of Manchester\, Cracking Good Food\, Fareshare Greater Ma
nchester\, the chef Maz Linford and older people\nfrom across Manchester
