 n to one of Kronheimer's problems in the 1997 Kirby problem list.  More 
 specifically\, for each integer n we construct a simply connected 4-mani
 fold admitting a smoothly embedded surface of self intersection number n
  such that the complement of the surface has non-trivial fundamental gro
 up.
