Talk title: Harming your foetus: Pregnancy and difficult deontological distinctions.
Abstract: Most contemporary discussion of maternal behaviour treats mothers who fail to act in the best interests of
their children as if they violated the strongest deontological constraint: the constraint against doing harm to others.
I argue that the distinction between doing and allowing does not apply easily in pregnancy.
Classification of a pregnant woman's behaviour as doing or merely allowing harm may require
an independent account of what pregnant women can reasonably be expected to do for their future child.
