DESCRIPTION:Join us for the latest in the history external speaker resear
ch seminar series. This paper examines the Soviet state’s contribution t
o the liberalization of international trade from the mid-1960s to the la
te 1970s. Looking at the USSR’s participation in the United Nations Conf
erence on Trade and Development\, the paper complicates the view of the
Soviet state as a ‘liberal subject’\, an actor that always sought its se
lf-interest\, and calls for historians of the Soviet state to engage wit
h the political\, ideational and emotional dimensions of economic exchan
ges to investigate the USSR’s place in the global economy.
