DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Taibat Lawanson (University of Liverpool)\n\nSeminar
co-hosted by the African Cities Research Consortium and the Global Urba
n Futures and Environment\, Policy and Place research groups. \n\nThis t
alk begins with an overview of the cultural value of urbanization and go
es ahead to unpack how globalization and climate change impact urban her
itage assets. Using case studies from Lagos\, Nigeria\, we highlight how
attempts at implementing globalizing urban visions are inadvertently st
ripping away natural\, built and cultural heritage elements. By examinin
g how well Lagos is doing regarding the principles of Heritage Governanc
e\, we find gaps regarding all five principles of legitimacy\, strategic
direction\, performance\, responsibility and justice\; and recommend ac
tions and opportunities that amplify the cultural value of urbanization.
\n\nRefreshments will be provided!\n\nTaibat Lawanson is Leverhulme Pro
fessor of Planning and Heritage at the University of Liverpool. She lead
s the Urbanism and Coastal Heritage Lab at the Architecture Heritage and
Urbanism in Western Africa Research Centre\, University of Liverpool
