"AI and Critical Thinking - An exploratory Workshop"
with Mark Johnson and Sophie Evison
As the capability of AI to write essays, code, perform analysis and assist in administrative tasks has dramatically increased, the intellectual and critical engagement from humans has become increasingly important across all sectors of industry and education. While AI astonishes in its ability to emulate human action, this capability only makes it more urgent that fine judgement and wisdom is both taught and exercised by staff and students.
In this session Dr Sophie Evison (Biology) and Dr Mark Johnson (Occupational Health) will discuss recent experiences in encouraging students to think critically, both with the aid of AI, and with the aid of new assessment approaches which use AI to steer students away from depending on technology. The session will include active exploration of some of the affordances of AI, including the use of diagramming and creative outputs as pedagogical steps in distinction-making, active learning and critical judgement.
