DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event taking place online and on the Univers

orld: print culture in focus brings to campus three expert speakers: Jea
nne Nuechterlein (York)\, Ulinka Rublack (Cambridge)\, and Alexander Mar
r (Cambridge). Each of these engaging\, globally leading researchers wil
l address topics related to key themes of the landmark exhibition Albrec
ht Dürer’s material world\, on now at the Whitworth\, The University of
Manchester. This seminar series is supported by a grant from The John Ry
lands Research Institute and Library\, which has lent important objects
to the Whitworth exhibition.\n\nTalk title: Albrecht Dürer’s Conceptions
of Measurement\, talk by Professor Ulinka Nuechterlein from the Univers
ity of York\nThroughout his career\, Dürer sought to underpin his artist
ic work with theories of measurement and proportion. Early on\, he appea
red to believe that someone with the right knowledge would be able to sh
ow him the ‘correct’ approach to bodily proportion\, but when he failed
to find a teacher\, he resolved to find the answers through his own stud
ies. We know that he consulted the writings of Vitruvius and Euclid\, am
ong others\, but over the years he became less confident that any single
system could suffice for the complexity of artistic production. This ta
lk will address the evolution of Dürer’s attitudes towards measurement a
nd his mature views as expressed in his treatises Underweysung der Messu
ng (Instruction on Measurement\, 1525) and Vier Bücher von menschlicher
Proportion (Four Books on Human Proportion\, 1528). Both of these works
suggest that he still believed in the intrinsic value of mathematical sy
stems\, even while also believing that what artists needed above all was
the capacity to invent freely. The intrinsic contradictions within thes
e views can be seen in the woodcut illustrations to these treatises\, as
well as in his printmaking more generally.\n\n\n\nTo book a free ticket
