SUMMARY:Lovell lecture: The formation of stars and planets – new insight
 from the Herschel Space Observatory

DESCRIPTION:Prof Derek Ward-Thompson\nUniversity of Central Lancashire\n\
nThe Herschel Space Observatory was an ESA space telescope which flew fr
om 2009 until 2013 and collected a huge archive of imaging and spectrosc
opy at several far-infrared wavelengths. It studied\, amongst other thin
gs\, many regions of star formation. Detailed analysis of these investig
ations has allowed astronomers to revise their thinking on how stars and
planets form. A new paradigm has emerged\, in which magnetic fields\, f
ilamentary structures and gravitational attraction combine to produce th
e mass function of stars that we observe today. The next generation of i
nstruments will now be targeted to test the predictions of this new theo
ry.\n\nPre-lecture dining is available in the Jodrell Bank Café.\n\nOur
award winning cafe will be serving delicious pre-lecture dinners. Why no
t indulge in an evening treat?\n\nRoast lamb belly\, forced rhubarb\, cr

 sted walnuts £9.95\nSeared salmon\, parsley risotto\, spring greens\, co
