"Commuting patterns and urban expansion of neighbourhoods in the Beijing metropolitan region: a spatial perspective"
Research on commuting tends to focus more on identifying and modelling factors that influence commuting decisions and behaviours, which is also the case in China. Since the enactment of the National New Urbanisation Plan in 2014, the Chinese state’s strategy has shifted towards quality and sustainable urban growth. It is thus pertinent to deepen our understanding of how the diverse and complex commuting patterns of neighbourhoods in large cities are shaped by spatial decentralisation of activities and urban planning over time. By adopting a spatial perspective, this paper will systematically map and analyse the commuting dynamics of home-work locations in four neighbourhood groups that have undergone different spatial and temporal urbanisation contexts in the Beijing metropolitan region. The findings will not only inform planning for sustainable urban development in China, but also shed light on cities undergoing rapid development in the wider international context.
