This is a one-off special seminar hosted by Cathy Walton. In contrast to many large species that we are familiar with, such as fish or snails, marine microbes have the potential to be very widely dispersed. This raises the possibility that microbes would be characterised by weak spatial genetic structure and tend not to exhibit little local adaptation. The talk will examine the extent to which the marine environment has shaped population genetic structure and adaptive divergence in a near-cosmopolitan microbe, the dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina.
