The Education and Psychology group is pleased to invite you to an upcoming external seminar from Dr Lucy Foulkes, University of Oxford, on ‘the problem with mental health awareness’. This will be on the 27th November 1-2pm and you can join remotely or in person in Ellen Wilkinson.
About the talk: In recent years, there have been extensive societal efforts to raise awareness mental health problems, with the goal of improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma and increasing help-seeking. For some individuals, these efforts are essential and will lead to a reduction in symptoms. However, it is also vital to assess whether, for others, the current approach might be causing unintended harm. A growing body of quantitative and qualitative research indicates that mental health awareness can increase symptoms and other problematic outcomes (e.g. maladaptive coping), particularly in adolescents. In this talk, I review this evidence and discuss it in the context of my theoretical concerns about the negative effects of mental health awareness efforts.
