Peter Green is an academic in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Faculty of Science in Engineering. In 2014, having criticised the new Engineering Campus for lacking ambition, he was challenged to “put up or shut up”. He embarked on a secondment to deliver the design of the teaching and learning spaces in the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD). The intention was for the secondment to be 70% in the first year, 20% in the second year, and the 10% for the remaining years until occupancy in 2021. He is now on his third year at 70%!

In this seminar Peter will talk about his journey; how he thought that he was involved in a build project, but found himself in a change project. The seminar will consider how we brief the design of learning spaces, and the benefits of an architect who challenges preconceptions.

Delegates will leave the session with a good understanding of:

Learning spaces have two key stakeholders, and their viewpoints on the design of the spaces can differ widely.

Delivering change is difficult, even when everyone agrees that change is necessary.

Technical problems are easy; people are difficult!

The Academy for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure consistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes with student experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all those who contribute to the development, delivery and management of FBMH undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes including staff from across the University, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners. The Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertaken and/or pedagogy literature of interest.
