is part 1 of a two-part presentation by Andy King and Omar Pathmanaban\,
both academic neurosurgeons at the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neuro
sciences. Part 1\, on 5th March\, is by Andy King and describes the deve
lopment of the original work of Nancy Rothwell and Stuart Allan into the
role of inflammation in the role of stroke. This led to initial work on
subarachnoid haemorrhage\, and ultimately to the recently completed Pha
se 3 clinical trial\, SCIL 3. The inflammatory work has extended into di
scovery about the role of inflammation in brain tumours\, notably but no
t exclusively vestibular schwannoma and therefore potential therapeutic
