DESCRIPTION:Our annual Dorothy Emmet Lecture will be hosting Professor Al
 ison Stone. Taking place Thursday\, the 5th of October from 4pm-6pm\, we
  hope you can make it! This event is generously supported by the Royal I
 nstitute of Philosophy\n\nThe Philosophy Department at the University of
  Manchester presents the latest in our series of annual public lectures\
 , the Dorothy Emmet Lectures. This year we will have a hybrid presentati
 on (you can join in person or via Zoom). The Dorothy Emmet Lectures comm
 emorate Dorothy Emmet\, an eminent mid-20th Century philosopher and head
  of the Philosophy Department at Manchester for over 20 years. The lectu
 res are aimed at the general public and require no prior knowledge of ph
 ilosophy. The lecture will last around 45 minutes\, followed by 45 minut
 es of Q&A. You will be able to ask questions in person or post them to t
 he chair to read them out.\n\nTITLE: 'Frances Power Cobbe and Animal Eth
 ics'\n\n\nABSTRACT: Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904) was the driving forc
 e behind the Victorian movement against animal experimentation or\, as i
 t was then called\, vivisection. Cobbe is often remembered for her anima
 l welfare campaigning\, but it is rarely recognised that she engaged wit
 h animal welfare as a moral philosopher. In this talk I will explore the
  philosophical basis of Cobbe’s anti-vivisectionism\, focusing on her 18
 75 article “The Moral Aspects of Vivisection”. In this essay\, Cobbe tre
 ats the rise of vivisection as manifesting the tendency for science to s
 upersede religion in the modern industrial world. Then she endeavours to
  refute all of the main arguments in defence of vivisection one by one. 
 Having set out her views\, I will comment on their ongoing relevance for
