Abstract:
A group G is said to have a finite centraliser dimension (fcd) if there is a finite bound on the length of any chain of centralisers in G. Many important groups (in model theory, algebraic group theory,...) have this property. One immediate difficulty encountered in any study of groups of fcd is that the descending chain condition for centralisers is not inherited by factor groups or sections. In the case of locally finite groups, we will present a sufficiently strong property, which holds in a locally finite group of fcd and is inherited by its sections. Further, we will classify simple infinite sections of locally finite groups of fcd. Very(!) little knowledge of group theory is assumed; this will be kept light.
