DESCRIPTION:\nSouth African artist William Kentridge weaves together glob
 al histories of revolution\, exile and utopian aspirations\, exploring h
 ow they are shaped by the creative forces of memory and the imagination.
 \n\n\nWilliam Kentridge (b.1955\, Johannesburg) is renowned for his anim
 ated drawings and films that have been exhibited throughout the world si
 nce the 1980s. Rooted in his experience of apartheid and post-apartheid 
 South Africa\, they propose time and history as fictional concepts\, ope
 n to change and re-imagination.\n\n\n\nThis major touring exhibition foc
 uses on Kentridge’s large-scale film installations including O Sentiment
 al Machine (2015) and Refusal of Time (2012)\, an immersive work explori
 ng the technology of time-keeping and string theory\, created in dialogu
 e with physicist Peter Galison. A display of new and recent tapestries\,
  works on paper and artist books will accompany the film projections\, p
 resented within an environment designed by Kentridge’s long-term collabo
 rator Sabine Theunissen.\n\n\nCombining drawing\, tapestry\, music and f
 ilm projection as well as sculpture\, this major touring exhibition draw
 s on sources as broad as early cinema\, China’s Cultural Revolution\, op
 era\, scientific theories of time and space and the generative qualities
  of nature and creativity.\n\n\nThe exhibition is accompanied by three l
 imited-edition silkscreen prints by Kentridge\, available for sale from 
 the Whitworth shop and an illustrated exhibition catalogue with new writ
 ing by Iwona Blazwick\, Homi Bhabha\, Sabine Breitweisser\, Michael Juul
  Holm and Denise Wendel-Poray.\n\n\nThick Time is co-organised by Whitec
 hapel Gallery\, London\, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art\, Humlebaek\, Mu
 seum der Moderne Salzburg and the Whitworth\, The University of Manchest
