DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's 2017/18 programme\, The Constr
aints of Creativity\n\nPeter Burke (Emeritus Professor of Cultural Histo
ry\, Emmanuel College\, University of Cambridge)\, will deliver a public
lecture entitled 'An Endangered Species? The Polymath in the Age of Spe
cialization'.\n\nFollowing the rise of specialization\, including the di
vision of universities into more and more faculties\, departments and in
stitutes from the mid-19th century on\, one might have expected polymath
s to disappear. On the contrary\, the species has survived\, indeed it c
ontinues to survive\, despite the decline in the niches in which it make
s it habitat. How has this survival been possible?
