DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CIDRAL's 2017/18 programme\, The Constr
 aints of Creativity.\n\nPierpaolo Anontello (Reader in Italian Literatur
 e and Culture\, University of Cambridge) will deliver a public lecture e
 ntitled 'Bruno Munari’s Political Aesthetics'.\n\nBruno Munari was one o
 f the most important 20th century Italian artists and designers\, pionee
 ring what would later be called Kinetic Art\, and playing a key role in 
 the constitution and definition of the aesthetic programmes of groups su
 ch as Movimento Arte Concreta and Programmed Art. He was a prominent fig
 ure in Italian graphic design\, working for magazines like Tempo and Dom
 us\, as well as prestigious publishing companies like Einaudi and Bompia
 ni\, and became internationally recognized as an industrial designer\, b
 eing awarded the prestigious ŒCompasso d’oro prize four times. Additiona
 lly\, Munari left an indelible mark on pedagogy\, children's literature\
 , design theory and both critical and creative writing\, developing educ
 ational toys and activities for children. Throughout his career Munari a
 uthored or contributed to\, either as a writer or as an illustrator and 
 graphic designer\, almost 180 books\, ranging from essays on art to expe
 rimental books\, creative writing\, didactic books and children's litera
 ture. This talk will investigate the intersection between Munari's work 
 as a fine artist with his work as a writer and graphic designer\, explor
 ing the ‘borders’ between text and image\, and the range of peritextual 
 inventions that he employed in the books that he wrote and designed
