SUMMARY:Webinar: Being a Computational Social Scientist
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}us3-k99x85t

DESCRIPTION:Scientific research and teaching is increasingly influenced b
y computational tools\, methods and paradigms. The social sciences are n
o different\, with many new forms of social data only available through
computational means (Kitchen\, 2014). While to some degree social scienc
e research has always been marked by technological approaches\, the fiel
d of computational social science involves the use of tools\, data and m
ethods that require a different skill set and mindset.\n\nThis free webi
nar\, organised by the UK Data Service\, is part of an ongoing series fo
cusing on new forms of data for social science research. Specifically\,
this webinar demystifies computational social science\, and explores how
and why social scientists should embrace computational methods. Present
ed by Dr Julia Kasmire and Dr Diarmuid McDonnell of the UK Data Service\
, this webinar examines five key domains of computational social science
 : \n\n1. Thinking computationally\n2. Writing code\n3. Computational env
ironments\n4. Manipulating structured and unstructured data\n5. Reproduc
ibility of the scientific workflow\n\nWe cover key theories and ideas be
hind each domain and provide example code\, written in the popular Pytho
n programming language\, that demonstrates some of the key skills comput
ational social scientists need to develop. \n\nBibliography\n\nKitchen\,
