 stract: Invariants of curves and their Jacobians over local fields carry
  a lot of arithmetic information. Many such invariants depend on the red
 uction type of the curve\, i.e. a choice of mod p reduction of the curve
 . In this talk we will investigate how the reduction type varies in p-ad
 ic families of smooth projective curves\, and give applications to the b
 ehaviour of local invariants such as the Tamagawa number\, local root nu
