 \n\nViewing networks as data rather than representations of systems\, we
  break the suggestive bond between phenomenon and metaphor. As a consequ
 ence\, networks are normalized: to be empirically meaningful\, their mod
 eling and analysis requires the same level of theoretical justification 
 that as is common for samples\, time series\, and other data. I will arg
 ue that this normalization is aided by decomposing the network approach 
 into more elementary building blocks and should\, maybe counter-intuitiv
 ely\, result in a push for and expansion of network research.\n
