DESCRIPTION:The global policy response to the threat of climate change ha
 s been extremely weak.  Since 1988 much ink has been spilt\, but emissio
 ns continue to climb.  In this session I will discuss the particular cas
 e of Australia. It has enormous renewable energy potential and vulnerabi
 lity to climate impacts. However\, the responses to climate change from 
 political and economic elites have been characterised by lack of ambitio
 n and extreme resistance to even mild instruments such as carbon pricing
 . Drawing on the findings of research conducted for my recently complete
 d PhD\, I explain the historical roots of the current impasse\, and sugg
 est what the lessons to be drawn from such stark failure might be for po
 licymakers\, academics and activists.
