The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted global value chains (GVCs) at its fundamental core in an unprecedented manner and incomparable in scale and magnitude to previous global economic crises. In this talk, Dr. Gale Raj-Reichert (Lecturer in Economic Geography, Queen Mary University London and Research Fellow, Berlin Social Science Center) will assess these impacts on one of the more globalised industries with vast and complex GVCs -- the electronics industry. By focusing on this GVC occupied by United States (US)-based lead or brand firms and their large first-tier suppliers also known as contract manufacturers, this talk will highlight how the Covid-19 crisis affects these firms, their inter-firm relationships, and their co-organisation of GVCs and examine the trends and potential outcomes to their recovery and resilience including regionalisation of value chains.
