Media Accessibility: New environments, New Hybrid Audiovisual Modalities

This session will consist of two parts, both of which aim to illustrate how integrating knowledge from other fields can yield new perspectives in audiovisual translation. In the first part, I will refer to EASIT, an Erasmus+ project that merges the concepts of easy language and audiovisual translation in order to research whether new “hybrid” transfer modes such as “easy audio description” or “easy subtitles” can be produced. I will explain the work done so far in the project, which includes a survey and a series of focus groups and interviews, and I will discuss the challenges and opportunities that the concept of “easy audiovisual transfer modes” opens. In the second part of my presentation, I will focus on the RAD project as a way to show the wide array of unexplored topics that surround audio description. More specifically, I will focus on how prosodic analysis can be integrated in audio description research. The rationale behind my presentation is that we need to move beyond traditional grounds and explore new territories to better understand current practices and propose innovative proposals that cater for diverse user needs.
