The workshop aims to expose how language, both spoken and written, enacts social and cultural ideologies. It is directed to postgraduates who work with and understand language widely as social practice.
Participants will gain an understanding of the uses and applications of Discourse Analysis as a theory of language, and simultaneously, as a method for researching written and oral language as it is actually used. They will also be able to acquire the specific terminology related to this method of research and differentiate between its various range of methodologies.
A first exercise asks postgraduates to define the ways in which we understand POWER in relation to language, encouraging a discussion on the moral standards we draw on to differentiate between power and abuse. Students will also be asked to skim-read selected PhD thesis chapters to identify the methodology used and its objects of investigation.
