Dr Kate Ince (University of Birmingham). 'Freedom, sex and the body in the cinema of Catherine Breillat'. For those unfamiliar with her work, this paper will offer a general introduction to the films of Breillat, arguably France's leading female (and feminist) director of recent years. It will then offer a reading of one of her less-discussed films Brève Traversée (2001) that brings out Breillat's vision of embodied, desiring and speaking female subjectivity and male-female intersubjectivity.
