What Matters in Funding: The Value of Research Coherence and Alignment in Evaluators’ Decisions

Abstract:

This paper investigates the determinants of the selection of scientists seeking funds for proposed research projects. We employ a neural network algorithm to assess how a project’s coherence with the scientist’s previous work and its alignment with subjects of general interest for the scientific community affect the probability of funding. We find a variation across academic disciplines. In life sciences and chemistry, projects that are more coherent and aligned have a higher likelihood of winning fellowship funding, with these trends eroding over time. In physics, only a project’s coherence with dated work is positively associated with higher chances of funding.

Dr. Fabiana Visentin is Assistant Professor at UNU-MERIT, Maastricht University. Before moving to Maastricht, she worked as Senior Research Fellow at the Chair of Economics and Management of Innovation at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland. She was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Lugano, Lugano, Switzerland, and at the Goizueta Business School, Atlanta, USA. Her research focus on the microeconomics of innovation and on the economics of science area. In these topics, her contributions have appeared in journals like American Sociological Review, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Research Policy, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and PlosOne. Her worked has been cited by the OECD, and featured by the London School of Economics Blog, and the World Economic Forum.
