DESCRIPTION:5.30-6.30pm. Buy a glass of wine or cup of coffee\, meet peop
le and discuss books inspired by the Museum’s new Nature’s Library galle
ry and brought to life by Museum objects. \n\nThis month’s book is Remar
kable Creatures by Tracey Chevalier\, bringing to life the Museum’s vast
collection of fossils through the story of 19th century amateur scienti
sts Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot.\n\nRemarkable Creatures is the st
ory of Mary Anning\, who has a talent for finding fossils and whose disc
overy of ancient marine reptiles\, such as that ichthyosaur shakes the s
cientific community and leads to new ways of thinking about the creation
of the world.\n\nWorking in a male dominated scientific establishment h
owever\, Mary finds herself out of step with her working-class backgroun
 d. In danger of being an outcast in her own community\, she takes solace
in an unlikely friendship with Elizabeth Philpot\, a London spinster wi
th her own enthusiasm for fossils.\n\nThe strong bond between Mary and E
lizabeth sees them through struggles with poverty\, rivalry and ostracis
m\, as well as the physical dangers of their chosen passion.\n\nThe book
club will be held on the third Tuesday of each month.\n\n
