DESCRIPTION:There is more to programming than simply writing lines of cod
 e. This workshop will provide you with a basic set of skills which are a
 imed at making the coding process more effective\, less error prone and 
 more maintainable. \n\nThis workshop is intended for researchers who are
  looking to obtain a basic understanding of the approach to be taken whe
 n designing a program as well as actually writing small programs to solv
 e specific problems.  \n\nThe format of the workshop will be a mixture o
 f PowerPoint presentations and hands-on practical exercises using the Py
 thon programming language\, open source datasets and social sciences dat
 asets from the UK Data Service.\n\nThis workshop will provide an overvie
 w of:\n\nDay 1\nSpecifying the problem to be solved  \nCreating flowchar
 ts and pseudo-code\nDocumentation \nBasic Python coding constructs\nTest
 ing and debugging\nProcessing data from files\n\nDay 2\nCreating functio
 ns and using parameters\nIntroduction to object oriented programming\nIn
 troduction to the Pandas and Matplotlib Python packages.\nCreating and r
 unning complete programs\n\nThis course will be of interest to those in 
 social science research who have previous experience with writing SPSS o
 r Stata code but with no formal training in programming. It is free to a
 ttend and refreshments\, but not lunch\, will be provided. Lunch can be 
 purchased from nearby cafes or you can bring your own.
